Pane di San Giuseppe (St. Joseph Bread)
I am an avid bread baker. I would never miss an opportunity to make a beautiful bread! This is a Sicilian tradition for St. Joseph Day made as a devotion to the father of all fathers. I hope you enjoy my version of this bread.
Pane Di San Giuseppe
Ingredients
- 500 g Bread Flour
- 2 Large Eggs
- 250 ml Warm Milk
- 7 g Active Dry Yeast
- 7 g Sugar to feed Yeast
- 28 g Melted Butter
- 10 g Salt
- Fennel Seed to taste
- Sesame Seeds
- Egg Wash= 1 egg + 1 tbsp water
Instructions
- Add flour and salt to the bowl of a stand mixer. Mix well.
- In a separate bowl add warm milk, eggs, yeast and sugar. Mix well and let it sit for 10 mins until foamy.
- Add the yeast mixture to the flour mixture and using the dough hook begin to knead the dough. Add in melted butter and mix well.
- Add in fennel seeds and mix for 5-8 minutes on medium speed until the dough releases from the sides of bowl.
- Place into an oiled bowl and let it rise until it doubles in size about 1-2 hours.
- Punch the dough down, cut into 6 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and let them rest for 30 mins covered.
- Roll each piece out to a log about 2 feet long.
- Form the logs into cross shape. **See video**
- Braid the logs and make sure to seal the ends. At this point use your creativity to make a design to your liking.
- Cover and let it rise a bit for about 30 minutes. In the meantime, preheat the oven to 375F.
- Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
- Bake in the oven at 375F for approximately 30 mins or until golden brown.
- Buona Festa di San Giuseppe!
